Curriculum and Culture

Collective Worship at Blue Coat

The school provides a daily act of collective worship for all pupils. This act of worship is fundamental to our Christian ethos; it is the means by which, in a busy day, we make time for prayer and reflection. We also hold termly acts of Eucharistic worship, according to the rites and liturgy of the Church of England, for the school as a community.

RE at Blue Coat

Blue Coat provides religious education for all pupils and religious studies forms part of our compulsory core subjects at GCSE. The school draws extensively on the qualifications and Curriculum Authority’s syllabus, moderated by recommendations from the Diocesan Board of Education. The syllabus requires a 66% Christian dimension to classroom studies.

In law, parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children from the teaching of Religious Education. However, we expect that parents/carers who send their children to a Church school recognise the importance of religious education in the ethos of the school and support the inclusion of all pupils as part of the curriculum.

Wellbeing at Blue Coat

Wellbeing lessons are about moral, social and cultural education. Wellbeing is taught by form tutors, external specialists and guest speakers to pupils in all year groups. Topics include: promoting healthy lifestyles, financial education, careers information, advice and guidance; staying safe both in the physical and online world and effective exam and revision techniques.

Sex and relationship education (SRE) is taught as part of Wellbeing in accordance with the statutory guidance and within the context of our Christian Community.

Wellbeing is integral to a young person’s development helping them make good choices in their lives, and will, in a very practical sense, support them in the decisions they will make about the curriculum and options they will choose as they go through education.
